The Year of Jonny Greenwood – Hollywood Music in Media (HMMA) Nominations

Jonny Greenwood isn’t a novelty anymore. He’s not reduced to simply the Radiohead guitarist branching out into film scores. No. Greenwood is an established film composer with one of the best track records in the industry.

In fact, his film work prior to matching up with a now longtime collaborator, Paul Thomas Anderson, was a mix of the odd experimental film or a variation of a music video, where his work drives the visual. Now, he’s one of the most sought after names, bringing unique perspective and atmosphere to a film, blending the orchestral influence with a modern jazz and many different musical styles.

Which Score Works best for AMPAS?

The two scores in question – Power of the Dog and Spencer present two wildly different film scores. One acerbic and moody in Spencer, using a variety of styles, and knowing Pablo Larrain’s filmography, it drives the tone of the film. In Larrain’s work he loves to utilize montage and Greenwood’s score perfectly accompanies the vision Larrain had in mind.

In Power of the Dog, it’s all driven by character and the score is more static in style, but broader in its exploration of character. Jane Campion channels the soft, isolated pluck of the guitar and it creates an underlying tension in the atmosphere. It’s simpler in terms of instruments, but broader in terms of its exploration into this world. It’s a damn fine Western based score, one of the best we’ve heard in years.

Here’s Jonny Greenwood on both scores:

In terms of an Oscar pick, frankly, both scores should be nominated. It’s some of his finest work and he’s already burgeoning on the overdue narrative. Thinking on strategy, pushing The Power of the Dog is the likely the smarter move. The film is a perennial best picture contender, while Spencer feels like a lone Kristen Stewart vehicle. The best chance to win in score is be attached to a best picture favorite, so the more prestigious score in Power of the Dog likely outweighs the idiosyncrasies of the Spencer score.

The worry is only one gets nominated, like in the HMMA nominations earlier this week. Only The Power of the Dog score made the cut, with Spencer falling to the wayside. It’s usually a smarter decision to push one over the other, but both pieces of music are more than deserving of not only a nomination but a winner.
