Titane: The Perfect Amount of Weird for the European Film Award (EFA) Nominations

The European Film awards is weird cinemas best friend. Only two years removed from Yorgos Lanthimos win at the 2019 EFA’s for his unconventional affair among the Queen and her loyal subjects in The Favorite, and the 2020 winner in Thomas Vinteberg’s explorations of drunkards in Another Round. Now in 2021, we see another strange film plastered all over the nominations

Julia Ducournau is having quite the year. She’s not only a Cannes Palme d’Or winner, but was able to push Titane to become France’s Oscar submission. Remarkable to think a body-horror genre film is making waves among the awards bodies, but that’s what we’re witnessing here.

Among a crowded field of late 2021 releases that were nominated and won Oscar’s last year – Florian Zeller’s The Father and Jasmila Žbanić Quo Vadis, Aida?Titane still leads all nominations with four total. Picture and director plus both leading performances getting the nod.

In a world where Titane could still miss an Oscar nomination with AMPAS members feeling grossed out by the grotesque nature of the subject matter, Europe has shown a deep appreciation for Ducournau’s vision. And at this point, it’s all upside for Ducournau, getting recognized for a film she likely didn’t have Oscar aspirations for when making it. Time will tell if this translates to broader award bodies, but this is a good sign. There’s a general enthusiasm for the work .
